Birding Newfoundland and Nova Scotia

1–14 July 2008

I met Bill Scheible, Cedar Rapids, IA, in Montreal and we flew on to St. John's, Newfoundland in the fog on 30 June. After exploring St. John's on Canada Day, we met five other members of our Field Guides group and Chris Benesh, our very knowledgeable Field Guides leader. We toured much of the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland, took a 17-hr ferry ride to Sidney, NS, and toured the northern half of NS, including Cape Breton Island. We enjoyed several great birding/whaling pelagic trips, and saw more than 120 bird species, four whale species, and several other notable mammals. Bill and I stayed on for three additional days at a delightful B&B, The Breakers, in Digby, NS, home of the world-famous scallop fleet on the Bay of Fundy. The scallops were delicious! We wandered the Annapolis Valley and Bay of Fundy areas and drove to Westport on the peninsula. We crossed southern Nova Scotia through Kejimkujik NP and visited several towns along the Atlantic coast on our way back to Halifax. Trip weather was generally sunny with a couple days of fog/drizzle. We greatly enjoyed exploring with Chris and our other amiable companions.

A series of photos, generally in chronological order, follows.
